New School Opens in Ocean Pointe

Keone'ula Elementary students now have a place to call their own.  Excited students gathered for their first assembly at the new campus on January 12.  First lesson of the day - meaning of their school name.

"Keone'ula means red sand," explained Kupuna Arline Eaton.  "The sand represents you, boys and girls.  Imagine, it took hundreds, maybe thousand of years for the natural polishing of the rocks and coral [to create the sand]. . . and of course there will be hundreds, maybe thousands of boys and girls like you who will come to Keone'ula School over the years and it will be the kumu, the teachers, who will do the polishing, making you look good."

Towards the end of the assembly each student anxiously waited for their special treat, a cup of ice cream to enjoy before going on a tour of their new home.

Keone'ula is designed for 725 students on a regular schedule.  With additional portable classrooms, the campus will be able to accommodate about 1,000 students at a time.  The new school was built on 12 acres of land donated by Haseko.  A formal blessing of the campus is scheduled for May.
