Haseko Dedicates One-Acre Site for New Fire Station
Some Honolulu Firefighters will be calling Ocean Pointe home. Haseko donated just over an acre of land to the City for a new fire station.
"The Honolulu Fire Department is very grateful that Haseko has provided such an outstanding location in Ocean Pointe for the new fire station," said Fair Chief Kenneth Silva. "This location will help us maintain our response time standards in the 'Ewa community and will provide a 21st century, modern fire station."
The City has budgeted approximately $6.5 million for the design and construction of the new station. The station's design will be based on the preliminary concept shown here (at right). Construction is expected to begin in late 2009 and take about two years to complete. The new facility will replace the existing 'Ewa Beach Fire Station on Pohakupuna Road, which was built in 1954.
The HFD's design concept for the new fire station in Ocean Pointe projects a building of approximately 12,000 square feet with two apparatus bays. it will house one engine company, a personal water craft for nearby ocean rescues, and allow for additional modern apparatus to be added in the future. The station will be built to the U.S. Green Building Council's Silver Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating, which is a nationally-recognized standard for "green" buildings.
"The environmentally-sensitive and gender-neutral design of this new fire station will serve as the standard for future HFC fire stations," said Chief Silva. "Quality facilities that address energy conservation, environmental concerns, and gender equity will help the HFC to better serve the community and recruit prospective fire fighters."
The two-story building design includes a public service/reception area, office, kitchen, dining room, day room, physical fitness room, decontamination room, laundry room with an extractor, fire equipment drying room, work room and storage, multilevel fire fighting training facilities, individual dormitory rooms, and private bathing facilities.
The HFC says the new station will satisfy the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System as part of the City's Storm Water Quality Management Plan to control nonpoint source pollution during construction and operation as a fire station 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
