DOE Adjusts School Redistricting Plan
The Department of Education has finalized a plan to adjust the school district boundaries for Keone‘ula Elementary and ‘Ewa Beach Elementary Schools.
Under the new plan, students living in the following Ocean Pointe neighborhoods will be districted for Keone‘ula Elementary from the 2008-2009 school year:
Children of Ocean Pointe residents living in Ke‘alohi Kai and future residents of Ka Makana at Hoakalei would be districted to attend ‘Ewa Beach Elementary School.
The DOE has scheduled a meeting to explain the final plan for next school year. The meeting will start at 7 p.m. on Thursday May 29 at ‘Ewa Beach Elementary School's cafeteria.
In response to feedback from residents, the DOE is allowing all students living in Ocean Pointe who register by Friday May 30, 2008 to attend Keone‘ula. Students living outside of the new boundary lines who register after May 30 will need to enroll at ‘Ewa Beach Elementary School. The DOE is also allowing siblings of Keone‘ula Elementary School students who live outside the new boundary areas to also enroll at the school.
The boundary adjustment is intended to address the overcrowded conditions at Keone‘ula Elementary. When the DOE was drawing the original boundary lines two years ago, Haseko proposed sending future resort neighborhoods to ‘Ewa Beach Elementary in an attempt to allow room for all of Ocean Pointe to attend the new school. Although the DOE has decided to exclude Ke‘alohi Kai, the new plan is a big improvement over the DOE's initial proposal, which called for using Keone‘ula Blvd. as the dividing line. Under that proposal, barely 25% of Haseko's development would have been districted for Keone‘ula Elementary. The DOE's final plan allows 41% to attend Keone‘ula, which sits on 12 acres of land donated by Haseko. A portion of Gentry's existing development makai of Geiger Road is also districted for Keone‘ula.
