Els inspects construction of Hoakalei Golf Course
Ernie Els' first signature golf course in Hawaii is taking shape. The championship 18-hole design will be nearly 7,400 yards long, making it the longest course on Oahu. Sprawled over 248 acres, it will offer players expansive views of the ‘Ewa plains, mountains, and legendary surf in sunshine nearly every day of the year. "This spectacular golf course will be a reflection of the scenic splendor of Oahu," said Els.
Hoakalei will also be the first golf course on Oahu to utilize Seadwarf® seashore paspalum turfgrass and will be part of the prestigious new world-class Hoakalei Country Club that is being built by Haseko in partnership with ClubCorp.
“This is a fine-textured, warm-season turfgrass particularly suited for use from tee to green on golf courses and sports fields,” said Els. “It has a tighter knit and delivers faster green speeds than other varieties of this type.”
The grass is extremely salt-tolerant and requires 50 percent less water and 75% less fertilizer. “This is a win-win solution because it can save time and money and contribute to a cleaner environment by putting fewer chemicals into the ecosystem,” explained Els.
Els’ and his design team inspected the progress of the golf course on Friday, February 23. After he and his design team completed their inspection, Els visited with several members of the James Campbell High School golf team. The three lucky high school seniors posed for pictures with Els, and received autographed hats. JCHS is one of the designated beneficiaries of the first annual Els Cup charity golf tournament.
