Hoakalei Prepares for Grass

Contractors have started laying top soil down on portions of Ernie Els’ first signature golf course in Hawaii.

“What's really satisfying is this was one of the most challenging sites I've ever seen, and yet in a relatively short period of time things are now shaping up very nicely,” said Els. “We've dropped the ground level by as much as 20 or 30 feet in places, basically right down to the coral, and that means we've had to introduce a whole new vegetative pallet, so to speak. Among other things, we've planted some date palms and some beautiful trees from the Acacia family.”

Under Els’ direction, contractors have installed irrigation lines on four of the holes, and are in the process of placing cart paths in preparation for grassing later this summer.

Hoakalei Country Club will be the first Oahu course to feature Seadwarf® Seashore Paspalum turfgrass, an environmentally-friendly grass that requires significantly less water and delivers faster green speeds than other varieties of this type of grass.

“Every aspect of this golf course has been designed to strategically fit the natural terrain and the team is doing a superb job of it,” explained Els. “I'm looking forward to my next site visit there.”
