New School in Ocean Pointe Named
Keone`ula School
Principal Eileen Hirota conducted a tour of the new campus for staff, Haseko and other invited guests.

Honor the regal children who are the heart of our community and hope for the future. That’s the message and mission behind the newly-named elementary school in Ocean Pointe.

Kupuna Arline Eaton suggested the name Keone‘ula Elementary to the school naming committee made up of DOE staff, Haseko and other community leaders.

She explained that Ke means “the.” One is the red sand that was used as the‘alaea salt, and the grains of sand represents the many children who will be attending this school for generations to come. Red is also a sacred color for the Ali‘i. ‘Ula means sacred, regal, royal. “Put together, Keone‘ula depicts the regal children of the community who are the core of this community,” wrote Prinicpal Eileen Hirota. “They will move forward from generation to generation with their progressive learning, and will bring this school to the forefront of public education.”

Hirota and her staff welcomed Keone‘ula Elementary’s first students on July 31. Because the campus is still under construction, first semester classes will be housed at ‘Ewa Beach Elementary then move to the new campus in January 2007.

The DOE-drawn attendance boundaries include all existing Ocean Pointe homes and residents of Kealohi Kai, Fairway’s Edge and Area IV. Students whose families move into future neighborhoods closer to the marina will attend ‘Ewa Beach Elementary School.

Principal Hirota and her staff are looking forward to welcoming the community to the new campus once the staff and students have settled in. For more information, call 689-1321.
